What is the Conscious Beauty at Ulta Beauty program criteria?

There are 5 main pillars with varying criteria in the Conscious Beauty at Ulta Beauty program.

Before beginning the Conscious Beauty at Ulta Beauty verification process on Novi, take a glance at the program criteria to understand whether your products are a good fit.

Ulta Beauty’s Conscious Beauty program certifies both brands and individual SKUs in five key areas. To participate in Conscious Beauty at Ulta Beauty, brands must meet at least one of the pillars below. Currently, to get certified for the Give Back pillar, you must participate in at least one other pillar.

For the Cruelty-Free, Sustainable Packaging, and Give Back pillars, certification happens at the brand level. 100% of your SKUs must meet the criteria for a given pillar for you to receive the badge.

For the Clean Ingredients and Vegan pillars, certification can happen at either the brand or SKU level. 100% of your SKUs must meet the criteria for a given pillar for you to receive the badge. For SKU-level certification, just the SKU must comply. Please see below for more details.

Here are the five pillars and their criteria:

1. Clean Ingredients
    • For brand-level certification, 100% of the brand's assortment at Ulta Beauty must be formulated without the ingredients specified on the “Made Without List”
    • For SKU-level certification, Novi will automatically certify SKUs that are compliant with our current “Made Without List”
    • Ingredients with limits may require attestations or data inputs

2. Cruelty Free

    • 100% of the brand’s assortment must not be tested on animals
    • The brand must provide documentation that it is cruelty free, and certified by one of the following organizations: PETA or Leaping Bunny

3. Vegan

    • For brand-level certification, 100% of the brand's assortment at Ulta Beauty must be free from animal products, animal by-products, and animal derivatives
    • For SKU-level certification, Novi will automatically certify SKUs where compliant with our vegan definition
    • Additional ingredient attestations may be required where synthetic ingredient options are available
4. Sustainable Packaging
    • At least 50% of the brand’s total assortment’s packaging*, calculated by weight, sold at Ulta Beauty must be made from recycled plastic or bio-sourced materials OR be recyclable or refillable
    • Brands must complete the Sustainable Packaging data inputs in the Novi portal which includes packaging weights at a total brand level, used to determine compliance

*The % of sustainable packaging may vary by individual product.

5. Give Back

    • Ulta Beauty brings this aspect of Conscious Beauty to life by spotlighting philanthropic efforts critical to a brand’s DNA
    • Brands must provide ongoing financial support to environmental and/or social causes
    • At this time, brands must be certified in one additional pillar to participate in Give Back
